The Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club recently heard from a panel of fellow Rotarian community leaders, who spoke on behalf of their organizations about resiliency and moving forward after Hurricane Milton and Charitable Foundation of the Islands Executive Director Dolly Farrell moderated it.
The panel consisted of Savannah Miller-Berg, Deputy Executive Director, CHR; James Evans, CEO, Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation; Maria Espinoza, Executive Director, FISH; Alison Hussey, Executive Director, Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife; Manuela Martinez, Disaster Administrative Director, FISH; Sam Ankerson, Executive Director, Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium; Eric Jackson, Public Information Officer, City of Sanibel; and Annie Campbell, Area 3 Governor, Development Director, The Heights Foundation.
The speakers were highly inspiring and motivating, sharing how our community pulls together to help each other, from digging out the mud and muck to cutting drywall, no matter the organization.
It was eye-opening at the same time, as James Evans from SCCF shared that Hurricane Milton was a surge event, not a stormwater event, and the city weirs can’t help with storm surge. He also indicated that there has been an approximately 8-inch rise in sea level locally since 1965.
The Sanibel-Captiva Rotary will hold hybrid meetings on Zoom and in person at the Community House. Doors open at 7:30 a.m., the meeting begins at 8 a.m. For more information about Rotary, visit sanibelrotary.org. All are welcome.
