The Sanctuary Charity Classic was held Jan. 29 and, despite the below average temperatures and strong winds, proved to be a success on every metric raising more than $200,000.
“We were elated to see everyone pull together and exceed our goal of raising funds to benefit human needs on our Islands and our employee scholarship fund,” said John McCabe, president of The Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation. “The outpouring of generosity confirms The Sanctuary and our community truly care and support those in need on Sanibel and Captiva.”
The outpouring of generosity enables The Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation, to provide on-going support to the Islands’ primary social service nonprofits, as a way to supplement our members’ individual donations. In addition, by having a charitable reserve fund, we have been able to ease the burdens for Island nonprofits when unanticipated local needs arose for things like tutors at
The Sanibel School to provide a boost to those children who fell behind during the pandemic due to remote learning. As individuals, we may have cared about this, but through the Foundation, we are made aware when these needs arise and are able to help in a meaningful, timely manner…all thanks to everyone who played in the Charity Classic and who help supports our efforts.
More than 150 participants and volunteers showed up at The Sanctuary Golf Club to help raise money for nonprofit organizations, such as F.I.S.H., Community Housing & Resources, Children’s Education Center of the Islands, The Sanibel School Fund, and SanCap Cares. A golf tournament was held during the morning, topped off by a dramatic helicopter golf ball drop and reception with gourmet food stations and an award ceremony in the afternoon.
Embodying the true spirit of the event, Mike Roos, who won the Helicopter Golf Ball Drop jovially handed the money back to the Foundation so the funds could be used to further help those in need in our community.
“We are very fortunate to have such caring and generous members, participants and volunteers to contribute to the success of The Sanctuary Charity Classic,” said John Schmidlin and Jackie Bingham, co-chairs of the Charity Classic.
“A full house of golfers showed up and demonstrated a high level of golf skills navigating our challenging course, which we were delighted to have in terrific shape thanks to our dedicated course crew,” said Director of Golf Jim DiMarino. “Winning this tournament required players to be on their A game.”
