Sanibel Rededicates MacKenzie Hall After Three-Year Absence

by SC Reporter Emilie Alfino

For the first time since Hurricane Ian almost three years ago, the Sanibel City Council held its regular meeting on August 19, 2025, in MacKenzie Hall (City Hall) on Dunlop Road. During those years, the Council has been meeting at BIG ARTS at some cost.

MacKenzie Hall has all the necessary IT equipment and monitors, and people will still be able to watch meetings live via Facebook.

Vernon MacKenzie was a longtime leader of the Sanibel community before its incorporation as a city in 1974. In that same year, MacKenzie, along with Porter Goss, Zee Butler, Charles LeBuff, and Francis Bailey, was elected to serve on the first Sanibel City Council. MacKenzie served as Vice Mayor.

The Council Chamber was dedicated as MacKenzie Hall in 1976 in recognition of MacKenzie’s distinguished public service.

The City Council funded the repair and renovation of MacKenzie Hall in the Fiscal Year 2025 budget, and the project is now complete. Council by proclamation dated August 19, 2025, rededicated its Council Chambers as MacKenzie Hall.
