The Sanibel Police handled the following area incidents from July 30 to August 5:
Sanibel Police are investigating vandalism at the Lighthouse Resort & Club, 210 Periwinkle Way. Officers found multiple windows and a glass shower door broken by a hammer, fire extinguisher, and paver. Surveillance camera footage showed three individuals on the property at 8:41 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4 – a match for the timeframe of the vandalism.
Police are asking the public for help identifying the three individuals or any information regarding the case. Call the non-emergency line at 239-472-3111 or text your tip to 847411 with the keyword SANIBEL.
Aug. 1: There is an ongoing investigation into a stolen rental car that fled from a Sanibel officer who initiated a traffic stop for excessive speed. Officers terminated their pursuit of the vehicle after they lost visual contact with it.
However, motorists began calling 911 with reports of a vehicle driving recklessly on Periwinkle Way, Lindgren Boulevard, and the Sanibel Causeway as it left the island.
A local rental car company reported the car stolen, according to police.
Aug. 1: Jose Gamboa of Fort Myers was arrested and charged with possessing a counterfeit tag and attaching one not assigned after police stopped his vehicle for excessive speed. A records check revealed the temporary tag on Gamboa’s vehicle was fake.
Police also cited Gamboa for unlawful speed and no proof of insurance. The vehicle was towed from the scene, and Gamboa was transported to the Lee County Jail. He was released Aug. 2 on a $4,000 total bond.
Aug. 1: Laura Elias of Tampa, Fla., was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after police stopped her vehicle for excessive speed. Her vehicle was towed from the scene, and police transported her to the Lee County Jail, where police booked her as disorderly. Elias was released Aug. 2 on a $500 bond.
Aug. 3: Police initiated a traffic stop for excessive speed and smelled the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers found 3.7 grams of marijuana in the vehicle and contacted the parents of the juveniles in the vehicle to advise them of the situation. Police seized the marijuana for destruction.
