The month of August was very good to Sanibel Island, Fla., media-wise.
It all started when U.S. News & World Report ranked Sanibel as the Best Relaxing Vacation Destination. “Beautiful white sand beaches beckon to sun-seekers, while the J.N. ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge appeals to travelers who’d like to become one with nature on a hike or bike ride,” the respected news source wrote.
“We were thrilled, of course, to receive the embargoed news back in early August, to be announced Aug. 25,” said John Lai, president and chief executive office of the SanCap Chamber. “Then the kudos just kept coming!”
Since then, Expedia has ranked Sanibel at #8 on its Island Hot List 2026. It was the only U.S. island to make it into the top 10.
“Sanibel Island blends easy beach days, family-friendly appeal and a relaxed pace that makes planning feel simple. This effortless atmosphere is driving its rise as a low-stress escape globally,” Expedia.com reported.
More recently, the high-ranking travel magazine Afar ran an online article naming the most charming small towns in every state in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Sanibel Island grabbed that honor for Florida. The article names Bowman’s Beach, Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium, “Ding” Darling, Tarpon Bay Explorers, Over Easy Café, Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, and Shalimar Beach Resort as points of interest.
Among the “safest spots to enjoy a worry-free beach day,” thanks to low theft risks, Action Network ranked Sanibel Island #3 among U.S. beaches.
“It’s so gratifying to our business community to be so deservedly appreciated for our comeback from utter destruction less than four years ago from Hurricane Ian – recapturing Sanibel’s high global standing as a most desirable travel destination,” said Lai.
