Sanibel School principal Tom Millins updated City Council at its October 6, 2026, meeting.
“My belief is the school should be the center of everything that happens on the island,” Millins said. “It’s an amazing school. Core principles are community, family, safety, and academics. I know what a great community this is. We’re on a great path academically and communicating with families.”
According to Millens, five years ago, the Sanibel School had about 400-500 children. It now has 212 (114 from on-island and 98 from off-island). Lee County does not have a specific minimum student enrollment number that automatically triggers the closure of an elementary school, Millens said.
The school will host a Community Event the evening of November 12. “We’re trying to get families and community back,” Millens explained. An Alumni Night will take place in January, and another Community Night in May.
Millens praised the Sanibel police. “I have never seen a stronger police presence in case of a crisis or emergency,” he said.
This is the Sanibel School’s 27th year as an “A” school. “The Sanibel School should be the top priority on this island,” Millens concluded.
