St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church is hosting a six-week session of Gymtrix, a program of fun sensory and gross motor activities combined with lively music geared for children who are 3 to 7 years old. It is family oriented, promotes group participation and emphasizes physical activity can be done with common household items.
Island resident and founder of Gymtrix Doreen Bolhuis will hold the sessions at 4:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting Sept. 15, in the parish hall, where she will share activities that can be replicated at home – no special equipment needed. Children who are 3 to 4 years old should be accompanied by an adult for each session; 5 to 7 years old can attend unaccompanied or with an adult.
Bolhuis has more than 35 years of experience teaching physical education, coaching gymnastics, as founder of GYMCO Sports, an educational multi-sport facility in Michigan and as creator of Gymtrix. She was an adjunct professor for Aquinas College in the department of Health and Physical Education, a Junior Olympic Committee member for USA Gymnastics and has appeared on local and national TV and radio as a guest expert in Physical Literacy.
Registration deadline is Sept. 8. Cost is $30 per child for the six-week session; scholarships are available. For more information and to register go to the St. Michael website or call or stop into the church office, 239-472-2173 or 2304 Periwinkle Way.
