Sanibel Island businesses welcomed shoppers at sunrise on Saturday, Sept. 5, for the 2026 Sanibel Island Sunrise Sale, an island-wide event that brought together more than 45 local businesses for a morning of early-bird specials, pajamas, prizes, and community collaboration.

The Sunrise Sale began with a simple idea: create a much-needed boost for local retailers during September, historically one of the slowest times of year for many island businesses.

Just as important, the event was built around businesses working together. By coordinating one island-wide event, participating businesses could help draw shoppers across Sanibel, encourage them to visit multiple locations, and create a stronger impact than any one business could generate on its own.

Organizers hoped that shared effort would give residents and visitors a reason to come out early, explore Sanibel and intentionally support local businesses during a quieter time of year.

What started as a retail-focused idea has quickly grown into something larger — a community event shaped by collaboration among businesses, restaurants, lodging partners and other island supporters. That collective effort encourages shoppers to move from stop to stop, discover places they may not have visited before and experience Sanibel’s small-business community as a whole.

Beginning at sunrise, shoppers made their way across the island carrying Sunrise Sale passports and visiting participating retailers, restaurants and other businesses offering specials and activities created specifically for the event.

Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with several participating businesses reporting one of — or the — best sales days they have ever experienced.

Organizers are continuing to collect sales-impact information and feedback from participants, but the initial response reflects one of the event’s guiding ideas: Sanibel businesses are stronger when they support one another.

“For me, this is a great community, and I’ve always believed that for our shop to do well, we all need to do well together,” said Josh Stewart, owner of Adventures in Paradise Outfitters on Sanibel. “We can be competitive and still be neighbors. It’s way more fun that way.”

Stewart said this year’s turnout also demonstrated how quickly the event is gaining momentum.

“We had an amazing turnout this year, and I think with another great turnout, it is going to solidify the Sunrise Sale as a yearly tradition on Sanibel.”

Customers described the morning as feeling like a party, with shoppers arriving in pajamas, traveling from stop to stop, and taking part in activities that went well beyond traditional shopping.

One of the newest additions was the Sunrise Sale Pajama Contest, introduced this year after feedback received following last year’s event. The contest drew 60 entries, and Lisa Krug and Marcia Chauvet were named the 2026 winners after fully embracing the theme with coordinated pajamas, a dog dressed in duck pajamas, and a decorated golf cart. Their prize was a Sunset Dolphin Cruise for four, courtesy of Adventures in Paradise Cruises.

Organizers said additions like the pajama contest show how feedback from participating businesses and shoppers continues to shape the event year to year.

The Sunrise Sale passport also encouraged visitors to explore the island. Customers collected stamps with qualifying purchases at participating locations and submitted completed passports for a chance to win one of three Sanibel vacation packages.

Three grand-prize winners will be drawn Wednesday, Sept. 9. The prizes include two-night stays courtesy of Anchor Inn & Cottages, Tarpon Tale Inn, and Shalimar Beach Resort

The event was made possible through the collective efforts of participating businesses, lodging partners, restaurants and community supporters. Rather than operating as separate sales, businesses promoted one another, encouraged customers to explore the island and helped create an experience that benefited the broader Sanibel business community.

Organizers said one of the most encouraging sights of the morning was seeing shoppers move from business to business throughout the island rather than treating the Sunrise Sale as an event centered around any one location.

That collaboration is at the heart of the Sunrise Sale and remains one of the main reasons organizers believe the event can keep growing.

With strong turnout, enthusiastic customer response and early reports of record sales, organizers believe the 2026 event demonstrated the potential for the Sunrise Sale to become a lasting Sanibel tradition while providing an important boost during one of the island’s traditionally quieter months.

Now that the Sunrise Sale has wrapped up, many island retailers are turning their attention to the season ahead, with new fall and holiday merchandise beginning to arrive in stores. Following the energy and turnout during the sale, local businesses are growing more optimistic as Sanibel heads into the fall and holiday season.

Additional business feedback and participation data are being collected and will be used to continue improving the event in future years.

The Sanibel Island Sunrise Sale is expected to return in 2027.
