Three SanCap Art League plein air painters are enlivening the Sanibel Public Library, 770 Dunlop Rd, with scenes from Sanibel.

In the northeast corner of the library, artists March Calkins, Kathleen Taylor and Dave Tompkins have created the Sanibel jungle with paintings of wildlife gracing our island. All three painters use watercolor for many of the painting on exhibit and Calkins has included paintings in acrylic and oil.

Calkins’s paintings in this exhibit primarily represent her plein air oil paintings done on location around the islands. A few will be seen as a “historical record” of their pre-storm appearance. Thankfully, other landscape locations remain as we know them as can be seen in her painting “White Pelicans at Ding Darling”.

Taylor has been painting watercolors for more than 30 years. She especially enjoys painting on location with the Sanibel-Captiva Art League plein air group. The Sanibel Historical Museum and Village is a favorite location for all. Her painting of the old Post Office is included at the library. Other special locations she paints are Blind Pass, Lighthouse Point and the old Bailey Homestead.

Tompkins, the third painter in this series, grew up in New York City and has included a scene of the Brooklyn Bridge to add a little geographical intrigue in the show. Tompkins was an award-winning industrial designer and in retiring moved to North Captiva and is a prolific watercolor painter, painting outdoor scenes around the islands. Many of his watercolors can be found in the southwest corner of the library.

The show will continue until March 25. Library hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday. Closed on Sunday.
