Two PWC Workers Injured at Wastewater Reclamation Facility

Two Public Works Construction workers were injured Wednesday, April 15, at the City of Sanibel’s Wastewater Reclamation Facility on Donax Street.

Brian Damaso was operating a forklift to move material and realized the forks needed adjusting to complete the task, according to the police report. Juan Damaso and Joseph Morgan were under the forks making the adjustment when the entire attachment and fork assembly fell off.

Juan Damaso was able to escape from under the weight and sustained minor injuries to his left ankle. Morgan was not able to move out of the way quick enough and had more of the weight fall on him. He sustained unknown injuries to his right side. Both men were transported to Lee Memorial Health for treatment.

PWC Superintendent Timothy Supko later told police the men’s injuries were minor and they should return to work the following week. It was determined the accident was the result of a failed safety check by Brian Damaso before he starting using the forklift.

Minor Hit-And-Run

Karen Alvarez, 34, Hialeah, Fla., was traveling north on Tarpon Bay Road on Sunday, April 12, when she made a left turn into the 7-Eleven parking lot, 2460 Periwinkle Way, and the back of her vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Fernando Montecillo, 54, Sanibel.

Alvarez was able to provide a license place number and police made contact with Montecillo at his residence. He told police he didn’t realize his vehicle struck Alvarez’s vehicle.
