Two Sanibel Fishing Club Members Catch King Mackerel

provided to The Santiva Chronicle

This exceptionally large King Mackerel was caught April 15 by Sanibel Island Fishing Club members Charles Sobczak and Mike Layton. The fish weighed close to 40 pounds and measured more than four feet long. It was caught 30 miles off Redfish Pass over a natural ledge in the Gulf of Mexico. The fish was taken on a 20-pound test line with a 30-pound leader and a #3 hook. When first gaffed, the fish made one last run and ran off with the gaff still attached. The fight lasted more than 20 minutes and it was nothing shore of a miracle the anglers even landed it. To learn more about the fishing club, visit its website.
