The Sanibel City Council, at its June 16, 2026, meeting, voted unanimously to award the Fishing Pier Temporary Repairs Pending Full Replacement Project to Stokes Marine in the amount of $118,120.66, with a contingency allowance of $25,000.00, for a total project cost of $143,120.66
The proposed temporary repair project will allow the existing pier to safely reopen for public use while the City continues planning and development efforts for a permanent replacement structure. These temporary repairs are intended to extend the operational life of the existing pier and improve public accessibility until construction of the future replacement pier can be completed.
Funding for the temporary repair project is being provided through generous community donations collected by the Fishing Pier Committee, demonstrating the community’s continued support and commitment to restoring this important public facility.
“I thank the citizens for raising the money for the temporary repairs to the bridge,” said Mayor Mike Miller. “We did not want to burden the taxpayer with temporary and permanent repairs.
In late April 2026, city officials confirmed that plans are moving forward for both temporary repairs and a long-term replacement of the Sanibel Fishing Pier.
The temporary repair effort is intended to restore limited public access sooner while engineering, permitting, and fundraising continue for the full replacement structure. “We raised a lot of money in a short period of time,” Richard Birney, head of the fundraising committee, said.
Citizen Bob Stern initiated the fundraising effort before handing it off to Richard Birney.
The effort received 174 donations from less than $5 to $100,000. The top five donors accounted for two-thirds of the money raised.
According to community fundraising organizers, the goal, which they surpassed, was to raise approximately $300,000 for temporary repairs, with hopes of reopening portions of the pier by the 2026 holiday season if timelines remain on track.
Major local entities, such as the Bank of the Islands, made significant contributions (e.g., $25,000). Additionally, local businesses like The Shack of Sanibel have run special promotions, such as donating proceeds from Sea Turtle Sundaes to the initiative.
The Charitable Foundation of the Islands (CFI) is managing the collection and disbursement of funds for the project, while the City of Sanibel oversees the construction phases.
The community-raised funds will pair with $2.15 million in Tourist Development Tax reserves allocated by the Lee County Commissioners to design and construct the permanent, storm-resilient replacement.
Work during this temporary repair will include replacing decking, repairing railings, restoring the accessibility ramp, and making safety improvements.
City Council unanimously approved the contract.
