Food Insecurity Rises on Islands

provided to The Santiva Chronicle

A recent New York Federal Reserve report shows a sharp rise in food insecurity across the U.S., especially for lower-income families, households with children, and those already facing financial hardship. Locally, FISH of Sanibel-Captiva is experiencing the same trend, as more working families, seniors, and long-time residents seek assistance. Many are struggling to afford basic necessities due to rising costs, depleted savings, and ongoing recovery from recent hurricanes. FISH’s food pantry and related programs have seen sustained high demand, relying on community donations and partnerships to meet local needs.

How to Donate:
• Food and hygiene items can be dropped off at the FISH Walk In Center (2422 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel) or at collection sites during campaigns like the Love Sanibel Back Food & Basics Drive.
• Financial contributions can be made online or mailed to FISH at P.O. Box 58, Sanibel, FL 33957.
• For more information, contact Merari Puente at merari@fishofsancap.org or (239) 472-4775.

Community support remains essential to ensure that island residents and workers do not go hungry.
