FISH of Sanibel-Captiva delivers reliable, nutritious meals to neighbors through its Meals by FISH program.
For many, access to healthy food is harder. Grocery prices remain high, and a typical trip costs more than it did a year ago. For those on fixed or limited incomes, that gap grows quickly.
Transportation is also a barrier. Not everyone drives, and store options are limited. For others, standing, lifting, or cooking is unsafe or impractical due to mobility or recovery.
Meals by FISH helps close that gap.
Jerry’s Foods prepares meals on a rotating menu every two weeks, balancing consistency and variety. The program is flexible—participants can join or pause as needed. A sliding payment scale ensures access for those with financial difficulties.
Meals are available up to seven days a week, with extra meals delivered on Fridays for the weekend. Deliveries occur daily between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dedicated volunteers bring meals directly to each home. For many, this visit means more than a meal.
“Meals by FISH supports both nutrition and connection,” said Erika Arnowitz, Senior Services Director at FISH. “We see neighbors who are trying to stretch their income, manage health needs, or recover from a setback. This program helps ease that pressure. It also gives us a chance to check in, even briefly, and make sure someone is doing okay.”
The program serves older adults, people recovering from medical events, and others needing short- or long-term support. Each delivery ensures steady access to food, reduces grocery trips, and offers a moment of connection to help ease isolation.
An island neighbor who uses the program notes, “I am deeply grateful for the meals provided to senior citizens in our community. This program has made a meaningful difference in my daily life. Knowing I have access to nutritious, well-prepared meals brings me comfort and peace of mind. It’s more than just food—it’s a reminder that we are cared for and not forgotten. If it were not for this program, I would be unable to stay in my apartment alone. The kindness and dedication of the staff and volunteers truly show in everything they do. Because of this program, seniors like me are better able to maintain our health, independence, and dignity. Thank you for the generosity and compassion you continue to share with older adults.”
