The Sanibel Police Department was busy this past week with several vehicle crashes and animal reports.
Greg Jennings of Sanibel was on Casa Ybel Road at 6:37 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, when he made a left turn onto Periwinkle Way and his vehicle struck a vehicle operated by Victoria Gardenhouse of Fort Myers, who was making a left turn on Casa Ybel.
Francisco Zapote of Fort Myers was issued a criminal citation for operating a vehicle without ever been issued a driver’s license after his landscaping truck was struck Wednesday, Dec. 22 on Periwinkle Way by a vehicle operated by Karoline Tyrrell of Sanibel, who was making a left turn from Donax Street.
Daniel Hernandez of Wauseon, Ohio was backing his vehicle out of a parking space Wednesday, Dec. 22 at Bowman’s Beach, when his vehicle struck the vehicle of Benjamin Oseroff of New York.
Lynn Huck of Fenton, Ohio was traveling east on Sanibel Captiva Road at 2:23 p.m. Friday, Dec. 24, when she stopped for traffic near Rabbit Road and the back of her vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Richard Capalby of Fort Myers.
Matthew Landfried of Fort Myers was backing his vehicle out of a parking space Monday, Dec. 27 at Waterside Inn on West Gulf Drive, when his trailer hitch caught a fence and broke it as he pulled forward.
Benjamin Grill of Cape Coral was traveling west on Periwinkle Way at 6:19 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, when he entered the Causeway Boulevard merge lane and stopped for pedestrian traffic in the crosswalk. The back of his vehicle was then struck by a vehicle operated by Myton Ireland, Jr. of Fort Myers, who was issued a verbal warning for careless driving.
Victor Romero-Torres of Fort Myers was traveling west on Periwinkle Way at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, when the trailer attached to his vehicle was struck by a vehicle operated by Renee Brand of Sanibel, who was merging onto Periwinkle. Brand was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way, as well as a recertification.
Animal Reports
A coyote was sighted Wednesday, Dec. 22 in the area of Ferry Landing on the east end of the island.
A resident, who heard of a possible “rabid” coyote on the island, reported on Wednesday, Dec. 22 she had observed numerous dead rats in her neighborhood on Sabal Sands Road. The rats appeared to have been poisoned and she thought the coyote could have ingested one of them, which is possibly why it appeared rabid.
Four coyotes ranging in size from older to very young were sighted Wednesday, Dec. 22 on the grounds of Sunshine Island Inn.
A sick cormorant was captured Thursday, Dec. 23 at Jerry’s shopping center on Periwinkle Way and transported to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife.
An iguana was sighted Thursday, Dec. 23 in the 1600 block of Bunting Lane in the Gumbo Limbo neighborhood.
An officer found an injured tern on the beach near West Gulf Drive Access Two on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 and transported it to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife.
A distressed sea turtle was reported Monday, Dec. 27 on the beach at Sanddollar Inn on MIddle Gulf Drive and the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation responded to the scene.
A possible deceased coyote was reported Monday, Dec. 27 on the side of Causeway Boulevard near Sextant Drive, but no animals were observed in a check of the area.
An alligator was reported Tuesday, Dec. 28 in the area of Algiers Lane and Casa Ybel Road. The responding officer observed an alligator across the embankment, but it did not appear to have lost its fear of humans and was not where the public could access easily.
A sick cormorant was found Tuesday, Dec. 28 on the beach at Sanibel Beach Club on Nerita Street and was transported to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife.
