Results of the 3rd annual Howard S. Danner, Jr. Wheels for Wheels Cycling Challenge, held late this fall, were recently announced by the Rotary Club of Sanibel-Captiva. The bicycle ride-based fundraiser resulted in a $33,000 donation by the Club to the Wheelchair Foundation. Approximately two dozen riders this year had pledges which will make possible the purchase of over 300 wheelchairs for those in need of basic mobility.
The event is named for the late Howards S. Danner, Jr., father of the event’s founder and past president of the club, the Rev. Dr. John H. Danner. Howard Danner was struck by a hit-and-run driver, and spent the last 17 years of his life as a paraplegic, dependent on a wheelchair. This year’s event was coordinated once again by a team that included John Henshaw and Roger Grogman in addition to Danner. A new logo for the event was created this year by David Cook. The team plans on holding the event again in 2022.
A portion of the wheelchairs purchased this year will be headed for Barbados. In prior years wheelchairs have gone to Guatemala, Trinidad and Peru.
