Sanibel Police Searching for Missing Man

SC Staff Report

The Sanibel Police Department is searching for a missing man. Richard Straka, 63, was last seen at approximately 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, walking toward the beach at 979 E. Gulf Dr. with a green flotation device and towel. His family contacted the Sanibel Police at 3 p.m. to report him missing.

Sanibel Police have enlisted the help of the Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the United States Coast Guard in the search. Extensive efforts were conducted Sunday by helicopter, drone, vessel and on the beach. The helicopter and vessel searches were called off during the evening for safety reasons due to high wind and rough seas, the police department stated in a release.

The search on the beach continued throughout the night and resumed at 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25. Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for Straka or any of the items he had in his possession at the time of his disappearance. Anyone who has any information is urged to contact the police department at 239-472-3111.
