UPDATE: Police Recover Body of Missing Man

Authorities found the body of a white male at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, approximately three miles off Sanibel. He was taken to the Fort Myers Beach Coast Guard Station and identified as that of the missing 63-year-old man, Richard Straka. A cause of death is unknown.

Sanibel Police began a search for Straka the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 24, after he was last seen around 11 a.m. walking toward the beach at 979 E. Gulf Dr. The family reported him missing around 3 p.m. and an extensive search was conducted by the Sanibel Police Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The family has been notified of the discovery and requested the media refrain from contacting them during this difficult time, the police said in a statement.
