SCCF Hosting Free Ecosystem Tour for New Islanders

provided to The Santiva Chronicle

Environmental orientation for new residents and business owners on the islands.

The Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation is hosting a free day-long exploration of Southwest Florida’s coastal environment by land and water on Feb. 4, March 4, and April 1 for all residents or business owners who have moved to Sanibel within the past two years. Register online here.

The orientation begins at SCCF’s Bailey Homestead Preserve before traveling to SCCF’s Marine Laboratory to see what researchers are doing to understand the waters within the estuaries of Pine Island Sound.

The group will then meet with SCCF’s Wildlife and Habitat Management staff to hear how SCCF manages over 2,100 acres for the benefit of wildlife. They will also hear about water quality on the islands from the Environmental Policy team.

For the afternoon, the course heads to Captiva to board one of Captiva Cruises’ motorized catamarans to get an up-close look at Pine Island Sound. They will explore some of SCCF’s restoration work, learn about mangroves and their importance, and explore ocean creatures with Sanibel Sea School educators.

Transportation throughout the rest of the day and lunch will be provided. Participants should prepare for outdoor conditions, including sun, heat, and bugs.
