The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation is hosting a native planting workshop series that begins on Feb. 20. The courses are held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Native Landscapes & Garden Center, 1300 Periwinkle Way. Registration is $10.
• Thursday, Feb. 20: Right Plant, Right Place. With this session, you’ll learn how to determine the right plants for your garden, starting with assessing your garden goals, such as attracting pollinators, creating privacy barriers, or providing shade. We’ll discuss the importance of understanding soil type, light availability, and moisture in your space to determine the right plant for the right place.
• Thursday, Feb. 27: Planting & Maintenance. In this session, you’ll learn how to plant, water, and mulch properly. We’ll discuss understanding plant establishment timelines for newly planted plants and determine the next care steps, such as weeding and establishing a watering schedule.
• Wednesday, March 12: Pruning. With this session, you’ll learn proper pruning techniques, what tools to use and why, and how to maintain tools.
• Wednesday, March 26: Pests. With this session, you’ll learn how to identify beneficial vs. harmful pests in your garden, avoid systemic pesticides, and opt for organic alternatives instead.
