Tarpon Bay Explorers Closing for Two Weeks in September

provided to The Santiva Chronicle

Tarpon Bay Explorers, the concession for the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, will close for a short two-week break from September 14-27, 2026. The concession plans to reopen on Monday, September 28, 2026. “September is generally a very slow time for us and the island in general. We are hoping this will be the last year that we close for a portion of September,” said General Manager Adam Sauerland.

Tarpon Bay Explorers also employs the staff who work the fee booth at the entrance of Wildlife Drive. However, Wildlife Drive will remain open throughout September with the current days and hours of operation: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday through Thursday.

For those who enjoy launching from Tarpon Bay, please be aware that the entire Tarpon Bay recreational area will be closed to the public, including the ramp, from September 14 through September 27. Upon reopening, Tarpon Bay Explorers will continue to be open every day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with rentals ending at 4 p.m. Kayak Tours, Tram Tours, and Boat Tours will be available throughout the week. Call the gift shop at 239-472-8900 or visit www.tarponbayexplorers.com to make reservations for any guided tour.

Pontoon rentals, fishing charters, and Hobie fishing kayak rentals can also be made by calling the gift shop. Kayak, bike, and paddleboard rentals are first come, first served from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have any questions for the Explorers crew before they go on their two-week hiatus, call the gift shop at 239-472-8900.
