The National Hurricane Center has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the west coast of Florida which includes Sanibel.
Potential Tropical Cyclone One was located approximately 500 miles to the southwest on Thursday, June 2. It is expected to become a tropical storm (Alex) anytime as it moves toward SWFL, which is in the forecast cone. Weather conditions will deteriorate in the afternoon of Friday, June 3 as winds increase with gusts over 20 mph.
The current forecast projects winds and rain will peak on Saturday, June 4 through evening with gusts between 35 and 40 mph and rainfall of 3 to 6 inches in total. The system center should be over the Sanibel area around Noon or 1 p.m. Saturday. Weather conditions are expected to drastically improve Saturday night into Sunday.
City of Sanibel staff will continue to monitor this situation and issue further advisories as necessary.
Residents, property owners, business owners, property managers and essential personnel should monitor the storm closely, prepare property for a tropical weather event, and make sure you have the current Hurricane Re-Entry Passes.
Hurricane Re-entry Passes are available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday at the Sanibel Police Department, 800 Dunlop Rd.
