Sanibel Captiva Community Bank will exhibit art by Sanibel Captiva Art League artist Nory McNelis for the month of January. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this local artist’s work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The public is invited to a reception from 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, at the bank’s location, 2475 Library Way, Sanibel. Join McNelis and talk some art. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

McNelis is an avid plein air artist who enjoys painting landscapes in this 19th century manner. All of the paintings in this exhibition feature island scenes. According to McNelis, “I began meeting up with SanCap Art League on Thursday mornings around 2007. We all painted outdoors. What a great way to become acquainted with our Islands.”

Explaining how she works, McNelis states, “First, I take pictures with my cell phone. Next, I set up my easel and start painting. Then I take more photos because the light changes every 20 minutes. The reference photos help me finish the painting in my studio at home. Not everybody paints this way but it works for me. Somehow painting in the open air brings a freshness that can’t be duplicated. I love painting landscapes on site.”
